Milano, 1955

Timpanist and percussionist in the principal Italian orchestras, Maurizio Ben Omar has an active concert career both as soloist and in chamber groups, collaborating with well-known soloists and ensembles (Nuova Consonanza, Pierre-Yves Artaud, Arditti Quartet, Ensemble InterContemporain, etc.) and, since 1984, touring five continents with the percussion ensemble Naqqara which he himself created.
He collaborated frequently with composer Giacinto Scelsi, while Bussotti, Corghi, Donatoni, Einaudi, Gorli, Melchiorre, Mosca, Sciarrino, Solbiati and Taglietti dedicated compositions to him.
He is professor of percussion at the "G. Verdi" Conservatory in Milan where he has trained students who have been subsequently winners of national and international competitions; he is also responsible for the class of percussion instruments at the Scuola di Alto Perfezionamento of Saluzzo.
As soloist, Ben Omar has recorded for Ricordi, BMG Ariola and Salabert.
