Trisì is a composition in which the electronic part is entirely constructed with the sounds of alto saxophone and trombone. In particular, the electronic bands and all the long sounds are derived from the processing of saxophone sounds, while the percussive sounds result from the processing of the trombone sounds. Electronic processing is realized mainly with granular synthesis as well as with the addition of bands of additive synthesis. Sound synthesis and electronic processing are carried out with Csound.
The title of the composition, Trisì (from the Greek "for three") emphasizes the dialogical exchange between saxophone, trombone and prerecorded electronic parts. The work begins with an extremely rarefied section characterized by a cadenza of the saxophone, followed by the entrance of the trombone and of bands of the electronic part that contribute to evoking a highly suggestive reflective, enchanted atmosphere. This preliminary section, where the three parts are progressively merged until it becomes impossible to distinguish the single sounds, is followed by a section in which the three parts are closely interwoven with a strong contrast between the live and the recorded sounds. Here, as in an alchemic mixture, the instruments periodically perform single sounds or rhythmic patterns which merge in the abstract complexity of the whole. The alternation of the sound levels, one moment obscurely rarefied and the next of intense density, seems to follow an interlaced complex logic. Harmonics, breath sounds, key slaps, the variety in multiple sound articulations - with ample space left to the individual contributions of each instrumentalist - allow us to comprehend the essential aperiodicity and ethereal freedom that mark this section. The next episode is characterized by a return to the opening "intentions". The final section, in fact, is represented by a perfect amalgam of the electronic bands and the timbre effects of the instruments. Three different sound sources have been merged into one.
