He was born in Sandwich, Illinois (USA), attended Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana and was an officer in the US Navy. He studied with Mrs. Lois Launtner, one of the first American students of Arnold Schönberg, at the New England Conservatory in Boston, Mass. and gratuated from the University of Michigan. In 1948 he went on to study with Frank Martin at the Salzburg Mozarteum in Austria and with Goffredo Petrassi in Rome, where he has lived ever since.
