Nicola Sani
Concetto spaziale, attese
(1997)
for Piano and Tape

Length: 12:30
Editor: Suvini-Zerboni
1 Performance: Festival Musica Verticale - Roma - 1997

This work draws inspiration by Lucio Fontana's painting to whom the title alludes. The live piano "lacerates" the timbre background created by live processing of the instrument itself. The piano soloist Maria Carla Notarstefano helped me to achieve these sonorities by deconstructing the sound of the piano. The performance characteristics that we recognize as "pianistic" have been removed creating a plasmatic raw material, which (although definitely contemporary in nature) recalls some basic qualities of the piano. A totality of space is constructed which is constantly changing and unpredictable like ocean streams. It is interchangeable with our idea of self. This rhythmic space, which is related to the original sound material, becomes a vortex: unexpected sounds rise to the surface and then submerge. Sign, sound and movement become a single gesture/concept of space.
