Synthetic sounds: physical model of bowed strings realized by Michelangelo Lupone, Marco Palumbi, Lorenzo Seno at CRM-Centro Ricerche Musicali, Rome (1997)

Dedicated to Antonio Lupone
The piece "Mother's Song" has been written on commission of the Radio Vaticana in a project developed and coordinated by Marco Di Battista; it gathers works of different contemporary composers who have been requested to compose an electroacoustic piece, inspired to the holy things and to the Marian themes.
Lupone' work on the figure of Mary has privileged the meanings assumed by the concept of mother; this has permitted that a plurality of senses and meanings could emerge. He utilized them in the piece as expressive reference. Tolerance, suffering, forgiveness, hope are the themes that in different cultures recur in the acknowledgment of the roles or of a mother's real life; the wide sense of these themes has suggested and stimulated his meditation and the interlacing among the parts of the piece.
A representation or better an interpretation of the concept of mother has lead the composer to an acoustic material strongly connoted on the semantic level: he has analyzed and chosen some aspects recognizable in our culture, concerning a female voice singing and speaking on the selected themes.
The expressive characteristics of the sounds and the words studied with Silvia Schiavoni, have been recorded and by these he has obtained a mathematical, physical model proposing again the shape of the natural voice, but with a high possibility of transformations and integrations with other synthetic sounds. In this way he has sought the grades of transformation which through the sound of a "virtual string" lead to a virtual voice and, through this, to song and word "mother" of a natural voice.
The beginning of the piece is characterized by the presentation of a sequence of reference sounds; it's a guide for the hearing because the timbric and pitch profile of the above mentioned sequence takes origin both from the string and the natural voice. The string emerges from this sequence and with progressive transformations realizes a synthetic voice whose acoustic evolution is aimed to create the word. The tension to the word exasperates the synthetic sound, modulates all the parameters till its transformation into natural voice, and this last one reveals itself in univocal way at the end of the piece with the word "mother".
The piece has been produced at CRM - Centro Ricerche Musicali in Rome and at Gramma Institute in L'Aquila in the period September-October 1998.
