Maria Carla Notarstefano studied in Rome with Ornella Puliti Santoliquido and Renzo Silvestri, getting her diploma with full marks at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia in Rome when she was eighteen. Later on, she attended a two years advanced training course at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. She took a degree in Law.
From 1970 she has been involved in intense concert activities with the most important Italian groups, in recitals, as soloist in symphonic concerts, in chamber music groups, such as a duet with the pianist Riccardo Risaliti.
In the last few years she has become interested in contemporary music and performed works of historic twentieth century's composers (Bartok, Schoenberg, Berg, Webern) as well as performing many world premieres of Italian and foreign composers, whose works have been occasionally dedicated to her. She takes part very frequently to contemporary music festivals, such as Nuova Consonanza, Festival Pontino, Spazio Musica di Cagliari, Settembre Musica di Torino, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Biennale di Venezia, Musica Verticale, etc. She toured in South America and performed in a series of concerts in the main cities of Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. She performed in Israel, at the Universities of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, in England at the Society of Contemporary Music in London, at the Cardiff Music School and the Holywell Music Room in Oxford. She performed also in Moscow and St.Petersburg, in Beograd and Nice.
She collaborates with "Rai", the Italian National Broadcasting Institution, with the Vatican Radio and other foreign television broadcasting corporations. She has recorded with RCA and Edi-Pan. She teaches piano at the Conservatorio Morlacchi of Perugia, Italy.
