After graduating "cum laude" from the Conservatory of Ferrara, Paolo Carlini continued to perfect his playing with such masters as Marco Costantini, Klaus Thunemann and Michael Werba. He was the principal bassoon player for the Orchestra of Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Orchestra of Teatro dell'Opera in Rome, the Symphony Orchestra of RAI, the Orchestra of Teatro La Fenice, the Orchestra of Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Toscanini Symphony Orchestra of Parma, the International Orchestra of Italy, the Orchestra of Padua and the Philharmonic Orchestra della Scala. Paolo Carlini performed a major part of the repertoire for bassoon in concerts, conducted by H. Soudant, Lu Jia, P. Maag, D. Renzetti, B. Giuranna, A. Schneider, E. Pomarico, L. Pfaff, M. Zuccarini, M. Conti, N. Paskowsky. Very involved in performing chamber music, he took part in almost every major festival and concert in Italy. Paolo Carlini toured extensively in Europe, the United States, South America, Israel, China and Japan, performing at such prestigious venues as: Carnegie Hall (New York), Mozarteum (Salzburg), Philarmonie am Gasted (Munich), Auditorio Nacional (Madrid), Auditorium of Tel Aviv, Tachikawa- City Municipal Hall (Tokyo) and Concert Hall (Hong Kong).
He takes a special interest in contemporary works, dedicating himself to constant expansion of new music for bassoon; one should mention his many collaborations with Luciano Berio, Sylvano Bussotti, Carlo Boccadoro, Alessandro Solbiati, Ludovico Einaudi, Jean Francaix, Giancarlo Cardini, Gaetano Giani Luporini, Dimitri Nicolau, Fernando Mencherini and Andrea Talmelli. First performances and recordings of numerous pieces by these composers are dedicated to Paolo Carlini. As a soloist and a member of different chamber groups, he made various recordings for such labels as Chandos, Fonè, Bongiovanni, Edipan, Diapason, Frame, Materiali Sonori, Tactus and also many recordings for RTI (Italian Radio Television). Soon to be released is a concerto by Nino Rota, recorded with I Virtuosi Italiani for an English label Chandos.
Among most recent recordings for Bongiovanni are i concerti by Alessandro Rolla, Giovanni Simone Mayr and Ferdinando Lizio with L'Accademia Filarmonici. Presently Paolo Carlini is the principal bassoonist of ORT (Orchestra of Tuscany) and collaborates regularly with "I Virtuosi Italiani". He is also a member of the teaching staff at the Musical Institute of Livorno and teaches courses at the Music Academy of Florence.
