For his musical development the acquaintance with Andrea Pestalozza was an essential moment, which led him to an enthusiastic study of contemporary music. He studied cimbalom with Márta Fábián in Budapest, percussion with Andrea Pestalozza in Genoa and later with Edgar Guggeis and Rainer Seegers at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin, where he graduated with honours.
He performs as a soloist or in chamber concerts throughout Europe: Konzerthaus and Philharmonie in Berlin, Biennale in Venice and in Berlin, Munich (Pinakothek der Moderne), Milano Musica, Triennale Köln, Teatro alla Scala, Società del Quartetto, Radio France in Paris, Filarmonica Romana.
As cimbalom-player he appears with the orchestras Berliner Philharmoniker (Luzern Festival), Münchner Philharmoniker, Deutsches Symphonie Orchester, Berliner Sinfonie-Orchester, Théâtre de la Monnaie in Bruxelles, Filarmonica della Scala in Milan, Münchner Kammerorchester, SWR Freiburg, Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Berliner Staatskapelle, Komische Oper Berlin, Orchestra RAI di Torino (Settembre Musica), Orchestra del Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Orchestra della Toscana, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, and with the ensembles Schaorun, MusikFabrik, Itinéraire, Accroche Note, United Berlin, Musiques Nouvelles, Spectra, Divertimento, Neue Musik Köln, Echo, under the direction of Pierre Boulez, Silvain Cambreling, Reinbert de Leeuw, Peter Eötvös, Michael Gielen, Michail Jurowski, Riccardo Muti, Kent Nagano, Kazushi Ono, Emilio Pomarico, Zoltán Peskó, Simon Rattle and Pierre-André Valade. 
In June 2003 he played in the Berliner Konzerthaus the German creation of the marimba-concert by Takemitsu under the direction of Christian Ehwald.
Luigi Gaggero took part to many radio and cd recordings (Accord, Dynamic); he recently recorded the pieces for cimbalom solo by Kurtág, Francesconi and Solbiati. 
He premiered solo-pieces and chamber music by Ivan Fedele, Luca Francesconi, Konstantia Gourzi, Jongtae Ha, Carla Magnan and Alessandro Solbiati.
In 2004 he was invited to give masterclasses from the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" in Berlin, and from the Hochschule für Musik in Frankfurt.
The next year he will play Peter Eötvös' concert for cimbalom and orchestra coducted by the composer.
