He obtained his diploma at the Conservatory in Milan. His subsequent education took him to the Hochschule für Musik of Freiburg, where he earned a diploma in 1976 after studying composition with Klaus Huber and orchestral conducting with Francis Travis. For years he has been a source of stimulation and direction for the "Gruppo Musica Insieme" in Cremona. He also enjoyed an active collaboration with Cathy Berberian, involving numerous concerts throughout Europe. Since 1982 Bernasconi has been principal conductor of the Ensemble Contrechamps in Geneva, touring extensively with that group to major locations both in Europe and beyond. In addition, he has been the regular conductor of the "Accademia Strumentale Italiana" since its founding. As guest conductor he has worked internationally with many ensembles. Premieres of many contemporary compositions, by such important composers as Castiglioni, Berio, Donatoni, Clementi, Ferneyhough, Huber, have been performed under his direction.
