Claudio Ambrosini
Ciaccona
(1998)
for Piano

I love the piano. From time to time I have written for it in several combinations, solo or with ensemble or orchestra.
From time to time I have also taken pleasure in writing dances, or pieces somehow related to dance. They range from works referring to exhisting forms, such as Rondo' di forza (1981), to completely new, invented models, as Boncingo, or Doppiarello, or Zigzagà, written this year.
Here comes a chaconne, a dance form which I find interesting because it merges two opposite dimensions of time: slow and fast, or better it is developed on the fascinating idea of "speed within slowness". As the classical chaconne this Ciaccona is based on a regularly descending bass line (a chromatic scale, in this case) on which a series of variations are built, often demanding virtuoso playing.
Ciaccona, composed in 1998, is also a "birthday divertissement" for Kristi Becker, to whom it is dedicated.
