He studied piano (with M. Golia) and composition (with G. Bosco) at the Conservatoire of Turin and got a Lettere e Filosofia degree (Literature and Philosophy) at the University of Turin. Later on he got a diploma at the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg under the guidance of B. Ferneyhough and with F. Donatoni at Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome.
He teaches at the National School of Cinema and at the Conservatoire of Turin. During summer 2003 he was again guest of Berlin's Senate, where he stayed in 1998-1999 as composer in residence.

The Accademia di Santa Cecilia performed in 2002 his Concerto per violoncello e doppia orchestra, a commission by Luciano Berio. One of his last works, Madrigale guerriero e amoroso, composed for the "The Song Company" choir group of Sidney and six traditional Chinese musicians, was performed in the same year in October during Melbourne Festival. In June 2003 his latest Concerto for piano and orchestra was featured in Turin.
