After obtaining his diploma in Composition at the "Giuseppe Verdi" Conservatory of Milan, Mariani took the Audio Engineer Degree (School of Audio Engineering). He also studied Electronic Music at Milan Conservatory and attended various seminars and conferences on professional audio and on recording and mixage techniques for new formats (DVD Audio 5.1, Dolby Surround) during the Audio Engineer Society (AES) Convention. In 1992 he was granted a scholarship for the advanced course of composition at the Darmstadt 36th Internationale Ferienkurse as well as being awarded the Stipendienpreis. In 2003 he was awarded the Government of Canada Award.

He held courses of electronic music and improvisation during the 17th edition of "Benevento Città Spettacolo" and of digital editing at "Rockimpresa", Modena. He taught Fugue and Composition at Bologna Conservatory and at present teaches Post-production Audio on the basis of ProTools Digidesign and mixage techniques and Sound Design at the Civica Scuola di Cinema of Milan.

In collaboration with Accademia del Teatro alla Scala he organized a specialization course in Sound Engineering of which he was both organizer and lecturer. He also collaborates with leading institutions and associations as musician, producer and sound engineer, including: Teatro alla Scala, Milan; Arena di Verona; Teatro Regio, Turin; Teatro Verdi, Trieste; Sibelius Academy, Helsinki; Simon Fraser University, Vancouver; Padua University; CAM; Musica Attuale, Bologna; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Arsenale Musica, Pisa; IIC, Salonica; Municipal Theatre, Iraklion; Musiche di Confine, YAR, Milan; Discoteca di Stato, Rome; Spanish Cultural Institute, Rome, Theater Winter, Tokyo; Confluences, Paris; Rumori Mediterranei, Roccella Jonica; Suoni e Visioni, Milan; Di Nuovo Musica 2001, Reggio Emilia.
He acted as consultant for the Ministry of Public Education on the project "Laboratori di Musica Elettronica" and collaborates with Fondazione MM&T (Music, Musicians and Technologies), being in charge of Didactics and Audio Productions. He is Product Specialist of Pro-Audio Equipment for Supersonica (an important company of e-learning and training). His projects are recorded for Victo Records (Canada) and Recommended (UK) and he is a regular guest at leading international festivals.
