Notturna
for Trumpet, Eight channels tape and Live electronics
The title of my composition enokes an atmosphere, or rather several atmospheres. The musical materials that make up this piece are inspired by a memory, imprecise and out of focus, of music associated with night. These are not clearly stated motives, but are rather a series of free associations, a collection of gestures which, through the use of various processing techniques, are brought together to form a musical statement.
Notturna is based on a single jazz phrasing. This phrasing is processed in such a way as to slowly reduce the musical intervals to a unison, or single note. This process is then reversed returning it to its original form. The electronics echo this transformation while these elements are gradually distanced from the trumpet line.
The electronics (part pre-recorded and part live) are not used merely as sound processing. Their function is to guide the trumpet through the memories of night music of which this piece is constructed.
