Andrea Nicoli
Strati sottili - infranti - muovono
(2000)
for Tape

Length: 06:00
Editor: ARS PUBLICA

This composition was commissioned by the Centre for Musical Research in Rome for an installation based on planofoni, live acoustic material. For this reason I chose to utilise acoustic materials which, in my imagination, represent some of the basic sounds of our simple day-to-day existence, whilst at the same time being rich with historical significance: wood, glass and paper. A variety of compositional techniques were employed:
Rhythmic articulation of samples, dynamic stretching of durations with or without transposition, cross-synthesis (Csound, Soundhack); a series of recordings of real "performances" using MIDI controls applied at a granular technique with dynamic parameters (Max/Msp).
These elements enabled me to trace an emotional map of the unfolding events, with a structure made up of vectors of differing speeds and directions, sudden changes or linear evolutions, disintegrations or recombination; it is almost as though the material, shattered, were a series of panels moving in front of the immobile listener.
