Vincenzo Gualtieri
Field
(2003)
for Tape and Piano

Length: 05:50

The introduction to his work Field consists of short statements by authors who have an influence on his current composing activity:

...The advantage of a stochastic or chaotic approach to event generation is that it preserves a kind of determinism while limiting predictability. With the use of a specific function, tendencies ara given to goal orientation without knowing in advance what exact result will occur. The disadvantage of such a method is that it is difficult to control, and, if one is not careful, it could create a type of clichÈ that could become, after a while, too predictable in its unpredictability. Of course, all algorithmic methods attempt to find an efficient method to generate events. It also depends on wether one wants to apply an algotithmic method to the macro (event generation) or micro (sound generation) level.
(G. Pape)

....As sound passes from one time scale to another it crosses perceptual boundaries. It seems to change quality. This is because human perception processes each time scale differently. Consider a simple sinusoid transposed to various time scales (1 µsec, 1 ms, 1 sec, 1 minute, 1 hour). The waveform is identical, but one would have difficulty classifying these auditory experiences in the same family. In some cases the borders between time scales are demarcated clearly; ambiguous zones surround others. Training and culture condition perception of the time scales.
(C. Roads)

Field was realised at the composer's studio and in 2004 awarded the prize "2nd Concurso Internacional de Miniaturas Electroacústicas" - Confluencìas - Arte y Tecnologia al borde del Milenio, in Huelva (Sevilla, Spain).
