Donacis Ambra
(1997)
for Flute and Live electronics

Donax, for solo flute, has given rise to two later compositions: Profilo in eco for flute and ensemble and Donacis ambra (1997) for flute and electronics.
Donax is a piece conceived as a journey backwards, going from the contemporary flute - with its highly virtuoso writing - to that most basic traditional archetype, the reed flute.
The syntactical organisation is based on priciples of psychoacoustic perception. It allows for lively dialectic relationship between primary and secondary materials punctuation marks and material's arrangement in space, enabling the layers of action to advance progressively.
If Profilo in eco mainly explores the harmonic potential inherent in Donax, Donacis ambra highlights its contrapuntal possibilities. The electronics-both pre-recorded and in realtime - throw new perpectives on figures from Donax by presenting them in the acoustic space: they are broken up restructured and filtered using multiple models of articulation which act like a kaleidoscope. In Donacis ambra, Donax's virtual polyphony becomes real, using a "cubist" technique to show us the same object from different points of observation, in a continuous alternation of acoustic spaces of varying depths.

This piece was realized in IRCAM with Tom Mays, musical assistant.
