He studied philosophy at Rome University and took his diploma in clarinet at the "Santa Cecilia" Conservatory.
From 1968 to 1975 he lived in the United States, where he graduated in performance and composition at the State University of New York at Buffalo and subsequently at the University of California, San Diego, studying with Lejaren Hiller, Charles Mingus, William O. Smith, John Silber and Keith Humble.
Member of the Center for the Creative & Performing Arts and of Petr Kotick's SEM Ensemble, he dedicated himself to the performance and composition of contemporary music, achieving (in 1972) a personal synthesis of vocal and compositional techniques after discovering the extra-European musical traditions and Canto Armonico. In 1973 he founded the vocal ensemble "Prima Materia".
