Double bass soloist and composer.
In the '80s and '90s his name has been mainly connected to the renaissance of the double bass, playing many works written especially for him by composers such as Bussotti, Donatoni, Estrada, Ferneyhough, Frith, Globokar, Sciarrino, Xenakis in the greatest festivals all over the world.
In 1987 he took part in Rome in a four hour non-stop marathon, playing 28 double bass pieces by 25 different composers.
He collaborated for a long time with Luigi Nono (arco mobile a la Stefano Scodanibbio is written on Prometeo's score) and with Giacinto Scelsi.
John Cage, in one of his last interviews, said what follows about him: "Stefano Scodanibbio is amazing, I haven't heard better double bass playing than Scodanibbio's. I was just amazed. And I think everyone who heard him was amazed. He is really extraordinary. His performance was absolutely magic".
He regularly plays in Duo with Rohan de Saram and also with Markus Stockhausen. In 1996 he taught double bass at Darmstadt Ferienkurse.
His catalogue includes more than 30 works mainly for strings (Sei Studi for solo double bass, Six Duos for all combinations of the four strings, Concerto for double bass, strings and percussion, etc.).
His string quartet Visas was recorded by Arditti Quartet for Montaigne Auvidis.
His collaboration with Terry Riley and with the poet Edoardo Sanguineti was a very important experience. In 1983 he founded the "Rassegna di Nuova Musica" which takes place every year in Macerata.
