Luciano Sampaoli - Biography

He is graduated in Semiology of the Performing Arts at Bologna University and then studied composition at the "G. B. Martini" Conservatory of Bologna, specializing with Franco Donatoni and Sylvano Bussotti and subsequently going to Paris on the invitation of Pierre Boulez for a period of work at IRCAM.
He made his debut as composer in 1978 with La morte meditata for ten instruments and six voices to texts by Giuseppe Ungaretti; his subsequent works included operas (D. G. uno spettacolo, 1981; Dal respiro delle onde, 1984), oratorios (Exemplum, 1986; La lite, 1989, with libretto by Mario Luzi; Secondo il Padre, 1990), chamber and orchestral compositions - all performed at leading contemporary music festivals both in Italy and abroad.
Numerous compositions are the fruit of his continued close assocation with the poet Mario Luzi whom he first met in 1985: lied for solo voice and piano, chamber opera, oratorio for vocalist, chorus and orchestra.
His musical conception draws inspiration from the Myth and from Aristotle's Poetics, developing around the themes of musical chromaticism and Tragedy in music, and has been the subject of international conferences (Rouen University) and publications (P. Maurizi, M. Raffaelli, M. Fabbri, G. Becheri).
Sampaoli's compositions are recorded on CD by Edipan, RCA, BMG Ariola and Fonit Cetra. He has also published various papers: G. Dufay, un compositore alla corte dei Malatesti (Luisé, 1985); A. Mariani, il gesto della musica (Ghighi, 1987); Il tempio della Memoria (Quattroventi, 2000); and, together with Mario Luzi, Ut Pictura Poesis (Nuova Compagnia Editrice, 1993) and Torre delle ore (Scheiwiller, 1994).
From 1987 to 1991 he was responsible for the programme "Concerto del Mattino" on RAI Radio3.
He teaches history of modern and contemporary music at the University of Urbino, where he is also director of the Laboratory of Music and Sociology of the Arts.
