He started to study composition at Parma Conservatory with Franco Margola, continuing at Milan Conservatory with Davide Anzaghi and taking his diploma in 1981 under the guidance of Giacomo Manzoni.
In 1978 he won his first important award with the string quartet Le rondini, the only Italian work selected at the 5th International Seminar of Composers in Boswil (Switzerland). Since then his compositions have been performed at major festivals in Italy and abroad: in Venice (Opera Prima 1981), Montepulciano (Cantiere Internazionale dell'Arte, 1983), Paris (Radio France, 1985), Rome (Nuova Consonanza, 1986), Zagreb (Biennale, 1990), Florence (Tempo Reale, 1998), as well as in Holland, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Germany, Mexico, Argentina and Japan. Some of his compositions have received prizes and distinctions in various competitions, including the Franco Evangelisti (1987), the Guido d'Arezzo (1989), the Mario Zafred (1990) and the Valentino Caracciolo (1991). In 1995 Aria, for violin and magnetic tape, was performed in the Ridotto del Teatro alla Scala in a concert to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the Liberation.
Having also obtained a diploma in piano under the guidance of Maria Grazia Bertocchi, he is intensely active as a concert performer with various chamber formations, particularly with the Gruppo Musica Insieme of Cremona, with whom he collaborates to organize the festival Spazionovecento.
He has worked on many translations of articles and books about music, including the new edition of Robert Schumann's Critical Writings (Ricordi-Unicopli, 1990), the Schoenberg-Mann correspondence (Archinto, 1993), Wolfgang Amadè Mozart by Georg Knepler (Ricordi-Lim, 1995) and four essays by Adorno (Einaudi, 2001). He realized the rhythmical Italian version of H. W. Henze's opera Das verratene Meer, performed at La Scala in 1991. He collaborated with Gianmario Borio on the book Itinerari della musica americana (Lim, 1996).
In 1993 he taught the history and technique of contemporary music at the University of Pavia; since 1997 he has taught composition at Mantua Conservatory.
