Composers

He graduated at Milan Conservatory in piano with Eli Perrotta and in composition with Sandro Gorli; at the same time he attended the specialization courses held by Franco Donatoni at the Accademia Chigiana of Siena.
Between 1978 and 1981 he won national composition competitions at Varese, Rome, Milan, Belveglio and international competitions at Turin in 1980 (with a Quartetto d'archi) and at Rome in 1982 (RAI-Paganini Competition, with Di luce, concerto for violin and orchestra). In 1983, in addition to mentions in the international contests "K. Stockhausen" of Brescia and "A. Casella" of Siena, he was awarded the Targa d'Argento in the music sector of the Premi St. Vincent per lo Spettacolo.
His works have been commissioned by Teatro alla Scala, RAI (for the 60^th anniversary of the radio), Holland Festival, the French Ministry of Culture, Paris University, Radio France, Mozarteum, Fabbrica della Basilica di S. Petronio in Bologna (for the VII centenary of its foundation), Festivals of Sydney and of Metz, South Bank Centre of London.
Solbiati's compositions have been performed at various prestigious events (Venice Biennial; Festival Pontino; Musica nel nostro tempo; Festivals of Lille and of Avignon; IRCAM; Midem, Cannes; Huddersfield; Montepulciano; Settimana Senese; Holland Festival; Perspectives Musicales, Radio France; Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon; Santa Cecilia, Rome; BBC; Berlin Radio; Zagreb Biennial; RAI Rome, Naples, Turin and Milan), as well as being recorded and broadcast by numerous European and American radio networks.
His oratorio Nel deserto had its world premiere at the Beaubourg, Paris in December 1989 and its first performance in Italy at the Sagra Musicale Umbra in September 1990. In 1989 he made his debut in the theatrical field with the stage piece Attraverso (given at Brescia, broadcast by the RAI and repeated in various Italian cities in 1990-91).
Among his recorded works we mention: Nel deserto (ADDA); Stille (CGD); Petit cadeau (Edipan); Down and Sonetto a Rilke (Ermitage, with Trio Matisse); Quartetto con lied (Stradivarius, with Quartetto Borciani); Tre pezzi for guitar, Filomena Moretti (Phoenix); Inno (La Muse en circuit).
Since 1982 he teaches fugue and composition at Bologna Conservatory. Since 1994 he has collaborated with the Contemporary Music Section of the Scuola Civica in Milan and since 1997 he has taught advanced courses at San Marino. During the summer of 1996 he taught at the Centre Acanthes in Avignon and in 1997 he held a masterclass at the Conservatoire in Paris.
